Started our day a little late (around 10 or so). It was raining in the morning but it did not seem that the rain would prevent us from going to the Hoover Dam today. The cooler temperatures actually seemed very inviting. But first things first ... After our morning ritual trip to the java detour coffee shop, we pick up our bubble rental and headed to the Whole Foods market! So exciting. It is located a mere 2 milled up the Las Vegas Blvd. I was supposed that none of the vegetarian/vegan blogs that I was consulting before our trip mentioned it. I just stumbled upon it myself, and this made me very happy ;) The store was amazing! Since it was my first trip ever, I am amazed and wanted to spend all day there. Not only do they have an amazing variety of deli style food available, but also friendly staff and free Wi-Fi ;) It was almost impossible to pick what to eat. So many coincides. Eventually, I got the Health Starts Here Vegetarian Wrap, with wonderful assortment or veggies, mushrooms and hummus, and Ewa got the T's Spicy Vegan Grilled Cheese, with avocado, jalapeños and Daya vegan cheese ;) So amazingly delicious!
After our wonderful meal, we picked up some snacks and beverages for our trip to Hoover Dam. First, a quick stop to the Post Office, where besides mailing postcards, I also had to charge my phone since the GPS seems to drain my battery quite quickly.
The drive to the Hoover Dam was very pleasant and scenic. The dam is located about 30 miles from Las Vegas, just on the outskirts of the Boulder City. The view was magnificent, and the concrete monstrous dam very impressive. Ewa and I got tickets for the tour, and we got to go inside of the dam! That was really cool. The history of the dam is quite fascinating, and it seems to have a positive impact on the communities around it as well as other states (like California, Arizona, and even Wyoming) and even Mexico. The Colorado River with all it's dams is a crucial source of water for our agriculture, viable energy source and recreational activities. We are both glad we got to see it. The cool thing about the Hoover Dam is that it is exactly between two states, Nevada and Arizona. So if one stands exactly in the middle, one can be in two states at the same time ;)
Just across from the dam is a magnificent concrete bridge called Memorial Bridge. Ewa and I took a short drive there so we could enjoy a wonderful view of the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and Colorado River for the top. The bridge is incredibly high, and it was super windy on top. I was a little scared to look down but I did at the end and it was worth it ;)
It was a long long day! By the time we got to our car it was after 6:00 pm. We arrived at the dam around 2:30!
We headed back to Whole Foods market to pick up some dinner. We decided on some sushi; I got vegetarian avocado an cucumber roll, and Ewa Spicy Crab and avocado California roll. We also grabbed some inexpensive Chardonnay form Harthill Farm in California and we headed back to our hotel. The hotel has free parking and valet service. It is quite convenient.
The plan was to head to the Bellagio Hotel after the dinner, but after the wonderful sushi and wine feast (while watching Olympics!), Ewa and I decided to called it a day. After all, we have another long day ahead of us tomorrow ... A road trip to the Grand Canyon!
Nite!
